The women’s division in WWE needs a major overhaul and it should happen as early as possible.
The women’s division in WWE hasn’t exactly been the best booked division in pro wrestling. At one point, both AEW and TNA were doing a much better job of booking their women. Toni Storm was perhaps the most popular women’s champion in wrestling at one point with many superstars making a name for themselves. Mercedes Mone joined AEW, Paige had signed with Tony Khan, and the the pieces fell of the promotion perfectly.
TNA, with some help from WWE NXT of course, built a strong and reliable Knockouts Division that has seen them put together some great matches over the last year or so. While none of the promotions have maintained that level of traction with their respective women’s divisions, WWE seems to have gotten worse than they already were.
RAW’S Women’s Division Is A Paper Thin Disaster
The women’s division on WWE RAW has been paper thin for a long time now. Even with Stephanie Vaquer and Becky Lynch returning and Lola Vice getting called up, the roster goes around having the same matches with the same people over and over and over and over again.
Raquel Rodriguez was in the Intercontinental Title picture for ages before finally clinching it from Sol Ruca two months ago. Her title reign started off well but has since fallen flat. Liv Morgan did not have a televised title defense for the first 100 or so day so her World Title reign and then she lost it in a house show to Stephanie Vaquer.
Becky Lynch has not entered the fray as she battles Morgan for a shot at the title, which, quite predictably will turn into a Triple Threat Match at Money in the Bank. The mid card sees Lyra Valkyria engage in a feud that has simmered and cooked over the last few weeks, and in some cases has been a good watch.
Roxanne Perez has been more or less been left on the bench for the past few weeks, and even when she starts a feud with Lola Vice, the star loses. There’s nobody else from the midcard who can go on to challenge for the world title next, apart from Iyo Sky, but she’s a babyface right now, and it’s not likely she will face a babyface champion. As for Raquel, she doesn’t have anybody to compete against either, unless it’s either Sol Ruca or Lyra Valkyria again.
Maxxine Dupri, has been on the outskirts of the division and has mainly been used as a valet in The Vision. There’s practically nothing she is offering to the division apart from the…err…’unique’ videos with Austin Theory.
With Naomi now set to return and Jaida Parker having joined, things could change quickly. There’s a breath of fresh air in the division, but it’s still short on talent. Quite the opposite of SmackDown.
WWE SmackDown Has Too Many Female Stars
Quite the opposite is true for WWE SmackDown’s women’s division. The blue brand has about 18 women’s factions operating right now with Fatal Influence, Jade Cargill and The Baddies, and Charlotte Flair and her gang. There are a plethora of other stars who can’t even get a shoo-in when it comes to getting the opportunities and Chelsea Green, the current Women’s Champion has her hands full.
Jade Cargill and her Baddies – Michin and B-Fab were absent from the show last week, with Alexa Bliss and Tatum Paxley also not being seen. Blake Monroe and Giulia are yet to have their match, while Candice LeRae had her last SmackDown match in February this year, more than seven months ago.
Tiffany Stratton has had two singles matches since losing the United States title in August, and has been involved in a meaningless and fruitless tag team with Chelsea Green, and a feud with Nia Jax and Lash Legend, two women who have also overstayed their tag team run.
Current United States Champion Jacy Jayne has defended her title only once since winning the belt in August. There is absolutely no direction for her title and for Fatal Influence too. Both Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid have defended the tag team title once since winning it in July.
And all this with Rhea Ripley, arguably the biggest women’s star on the brand, being out with injury.
It’s fascinating to think how much talent is simply being wasted when they can be brought over to the RAW roster and made better use of.
So What’s The Solution?
Triple H needs to seriously think about overhauling the women’s division. It’s clearly a lopsided equation between Raw and SmackDown with both brands not getting the best out of their women.
It’s evident at this point that the WWE draft is gone, and there’s very little chance of it coming back. The promotion will still not have a Evolution and would rather go forward with WrestlePalooza. In that case, the least that can be done is to format and reshape the women’s divison on both brands.
Several stars have been called up from NXT, and several others like Kelani Jordan, Kendal Grey, and more, look ready to make an impact on the main roster. It’s the perfect time for WWE and Triple H to revamp his women’s division and make it more enticing.
It’s a shame really that with the talent at his disposal, there’s so much more that can be done. Nattie, Ivy Nile, Jordynne Grace practically have nothing to do on either WWE RAW or SmackDown, and it’s gotten to a position where you just forger about their existence.
It’s definitely time for a change.
